Acids, Bases and Salts
Acids, bases, and salts have distinct chemical properties, and understanding them helps explain many chemical reactions and everyday substan
Core concept
Acids release hydrogen ions (H+) in water, taste sour, and react with metals to produce hydrogen gas and with bases to neutralise.
How it works
Bases release hydroxide ions (OH-) in water, taste bitter, feel soapy, and react with acids in neutralisation reactions.
Why it matters
Salts form when acids react with bases (neutralisation), producing salt and water as products of this reaction.
Key detail
The pH scale (0-14) measures acidity or basicity, with indicators like litmus paper helping identify a substance's nature.

Quick notes
• Acids: release H+ ions, sour taste.
• React with metals (H2 gas), bases (neutralise).
• Bases: release OH- ions, bitter, soapy.
• React with acids in neutralisation.
• Salts form via acid-base neutralisation.
• Products: salt and water.
• pH scale: 0-14 measures acidity/basicity.
• Litmus paper indicates substance nature.
