Practice and Revision - The Language of Chemistry
Let us practise and revise what we learned about the language of chemistry. The language of chemistry uses symbols, formulas, and equations
Core concept
Chemical symbols, like O for oxygen or Na for sodium, provide a universal shorthand for elements recognised worldwide.
How it works
Chemical formulas, like H₂O for water, show the elements and their ratio in a compound.
Why it matters
Chemical equations, like 2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O, show reactants (left side) forming products (right side) during a reaction.
Key detail
This precise language allows chemists worldwide to communicate about substances and reactions clearly, regardless of spoken language.

Quick notes
• Chemical symbols are universal shorthand for elements.
• Examples: O for oxygen, Na for sodium.
• Chemical formulas show elements and their ratio.
• H2O shows water's composition.
• Chemical equations show reactants forming products.
• 2H2 + O2 → 2H2O is an example equation.
• Reactants are on the left; products on the right.
• This language enables clear global communication.
