Understanding Sculpture and 3D Art Forms
Learning the key idea behind Sculpture and 3D Art Forms.
Core concept
Carving removes material from a solid block (like stone or wood) to reveal a form. Modelling builds up a form by adding material (like clay). Casting involves pouring a liquid material (like plaster or metal) into a mould to create a shape. Assembling joins different found or made objects together into a single sculpture.
How it works
Sculptures can be freestanding (viewable from all sides) or relief (attached to a background, viewable mainly from the front), and understanding this helps us appreciate how a sculpture is meant to be experienced.
